Five Gallon Bucket Filter – Poor Man’s Best Filtration Under 1000 Gallons

Posted on April 19, 2024

Home Made Pond and Large Vat Aquarium Filter Do It Yourself Inexpensive Effective

The MAIN reason I like  this filter is that it was handling twelve ounces of turtle poop each week without choking to death. It’s a work horse. Even when it needed cleaning, I could do “interim” cleanings of JUST the outer “coarse” pad, the blue pad. It clarifies and it doesn’t ‘eat baby fish, tadpoles or small fish. It’s serviceable by literally anyone smart enough to have made it. The parts are rather eternal and available on every continent. The pump can be less than $35. It costs about $100 total to make if you have to buy every piece.

Parts list:

  1. 5 gallon bucket, black. (Buy that bucket, boy)
  2. 1000 gph pump. (They have other sizes, like 800gph – Buy that pump!)
  3. 3-inch deck screws. (Epoxy coated 3″ BUY)
  4. Cable ties at least 6-8″. (Twist off tails – BUY)
  5. Open Cell Foam sheets or discs. (Inner foam is finer, black – BUY / Outer foam is coarse, blue – BUY)
  6. Tin snips or similar.
  7. Hole saw for drill about 3/4-1″.
  8. Weber Grill Charcoal Grate Replacements. (The ones I bought rust. It’s okay. Ferrous iron.)
  • Your bucket can be any color but BLACK tends to be less “conspicuous” on the pond bottom.
  • Cable ties are cheap and can be snipped and replaced as needed for rare pump access requirements.
  • Weber Grill Replacement Charcoal Grates fit PERFECTLY in a five gallon bucket.
