Can You Use Aquascape Parasite Ich Treatment and Aquascape Fungus Treatment together?
Some koi had some fungal issues and were also flashing on the sides of the pond, so they used these two products. They estimated their pond at about 1800 gallons, so they added both full bottles at the same time. Within an hour, all of their fish were gasping at the surface. They started doing water changes to try and save their fish and ended up putting them in a kiddie pool while they drained their pond and added fresh dechlorinated water.
All in all, they lost 11 koi, more than half of their fish. They’re pretty devastated. They wonder if the medications crashed the oxygen levels, or possibly there was an issue with adding both medications at the same time? Do you have any insight there?
Dr Johnson’s Comment:
“I went back and looked at the SDS sheets on the two products. According to the SDS declarations they are both Formalin based compounds. Using the two together seems to have resulted in a double dose of Formalin. The Formalin in both compounds is methanol stabilized which is FINE unless at some point either bottle was frozen. At which point the product will show cloudiness / flocculated white precipitate and that’s toxic to fish so there are rather a few unknowns. Oren’s suspicion of mis-dosing is correct in that twice as much Formalin was used as would be prudent.”
Question: EVEN if dosing with both compounds which functionally doubles the Formalin exposure to the fish, was that enough to cause morbidity and mortality? Answer: I don’t know because I don’t know how much formalin is in each product.
